.DISCUSSION...(Today Through Monday)
Issued at 205 AM MST Tue Dec 3 2024

Broad upper ridging is nearly-stationary...sitting across the
western half of the CONUS as a Rex blocking pattern develops.
Surface analysis shows high pressure across the northern High
Plains. The frontal boundary, which was over the CWA the last few
days, has moved eastward. Warm air has been advecting in through
the overnight hours. This will bring above average temperatures to
the CWA today, with highs in the 50s to low 60s. The warmest
spots will be across the western foothills, where weak downsloping
is expected. Little change to the upper pattern is expected
through Wednesday. Upper northwest flow will persist through the
northern Plains. A shortwave crossing the Dakotas tonight will
bring a surface trough to the area...and breezy NW winds through
Wednesday. Some gusts may reach 35-40 kt, mainly over central SD.
A strong upper low is then expected to cross central Canada and
move into the Great Lakes region on Wednesday. A strong cold front
will then cross the Dakotas late Wednesday. Cold air advection
will be strongest east of the CWA, but there is enough to push
cold air into the western SD plains before stalling out near the
Black Hills. Low clouds/fog/flurries will be possible into
Thursday morning over the western SD plains. For max temps on
Thursday, we`ll again see the distribution of temperatures we`ve
had the past few days. Highs will be in the upper 20s across
central SD while the northeast WY plains will be in the upper 40s
to around 50. Upper ridging breaks down through the end of the
week, but there is a lot of warm air all the way into western
Canada that will make its way over the northern Plains through
Friday and Saturday. At this point, forecast temps for Saturday
will be warmer than today.
